PlayNow-BCLCIs it just us, or is British Columbia rapidly morphing into Canada’s Nevada? Of course, one’s a rainforest and the other’s a desert, but they sure as hell have gambling in common. First, B.C.’s Lottery Commission raised (and we mean raised) the maximum weekly online betting limit from $120 to $9,999. Then they announced the construction of a massive resort casino in downtown Vancouver. Now on Thursday, B.C. is set to become the first state/province in North America to offer legal online casino gaming via some 75 different games on its PlayNow.com website. At this rate, it will soon be illegal not to gamble in Beautiful British Columbia. Read more.

What a load of crap. The BC Government says that they are getting in the online gaming business to offer an alternative to Private websites that do not take the same care for problem gamblers. They say that their links to support websites are evidence of this. Lets be very clear here….they are getting into this for the money. The private companies are in the industry for money, but also for the love of the industry, are all regulated by independant regulatory bodies (BCLC is self regulating…they do not have anyone looking over their shoulders), offer way better consumer odds (product is cheaper) and guess what….at least all the UK sites like bodog that offer services to Canada all already offer problem gambling support.

I think its fine for BCLC to be progressive and get in the game, but why do governments insist in trying to mask their motives when they start competing with the private sector. I also like how big mouth Vancouver Sun reporter David Baines, who has historically been an anti onlline gaming zealot, has suddenly gone dark on this issue. Hypocrisy at its finest right David.
