France opens online gambling market at last

That was quick

Cue: trumpets. Cue: La Marseillaise. Cue: champagne. C’est ici, c’est incroyable. The French market has finally opened its doors to the online gaming market, granting 17 licences to 11 operators three days before the start of the World Cup. Felicitations, mes amis. That only took 471 years to sort out.

But, hold on, is the music a bit out of tune? Is the bubbly a bit off? Could it be that you’d have to be stark, raving mad to launch a gambling operation in a country where the taxes and licences are so steep it’ll be years before anyone starts turning anything like a profit?
