For the first time ever, Time magazine has allowed visitors to its web site the opportunity to vote for the 100 most influential people in the world, and it’s interesting to see how noticeably different the results are from previous years. Though the first spot was taken by someone who would be expected to appear on the traditional list (controversial Iranian opposition leader Mir-Hossein Mousavi), this year’s list is filled with celebrities, sports stars, internet personalities and even a special needs politician, Sarah Palin (the next President of the U.S.).
To me, this is especially interesting, as it is a positive affirmation of the branding strategies I have utilized with Bodog for years. In our celebrity obsessed world, the street’s idea of influential is a lot different than the intelligentsia’s opinion, and in brand building, your only target is the street. Korean mega star Rain and Lady GaGa are both in the top 5 on this list. And we thought Time magazine readers were a boring lot. For the entire list click here.
