Android activations hit 700k per day; HTC has a plan to sidestep ban

AndroidAndroid has given its clearest indication yet that their products are taking over the planet with the release of figures on device activation. Google claims to currently be activating 700,000 devices on a daily basis, which equates to 255.5million units every year. To put it into perspective if you tot up every iPod, iPad, and iPad Touch Apple sold in the 2011 fiscal year it doesn’t even reach half that number (104.7million)

The doubts that have come with Google announcement every so often that “Android activations” have increased were also addressed. To answer the malingering question as to what the activations actually are, the firm stated activation means to “go into a store, buy a device, and put it on the network by subscribing to a wireless service.”

In terms of the money Google is making from Android, estimates put the number at around 13% of the company’s total revenue. CBS News’ Erik Sherman also calculated that the company gets around $5billion of indirect revenue from the mobile operating system. It’s thought the news on activations could have a disastrous effect on Nokia’s tie with Windows Phone as it may be the one to lose out in the ever-competitive smart phone OS industry.

HTC has already started testing devices that will side-step a ban that came after they violated one of Apple’s patents. The phone manufacturer can’t manufacture any new devices that convert phone numbers or emails into clickable links and CEO Peter Chou stated that they’re already working on a number of devices that will get around the ban. Chou also indicated that Apple will have a fight on its hands, stating:
