The internet is running amok with gossip that Sony’s gaming division is tracking rumours of a new Microsoft console, with the aim being to release its PlayStation 4 as near to it as possible. And why would this be? To prevent what happened when Sony fell behind last time, of course – so there won’t be a huge headstart for Microsoft when it releases its (rumoured) Xbox 720.
But is gaming these days just all about who hits the market first? In a report by Gizmodo today, PlayStation Europe president Jim Ryan, speaking to Eurogamer, said it would be “undesirable” for the gaming giant to launch a new console “significantly later” than any updated Xbox. This, he stated, would be to avoid handing Microsoft “another huge lead”. Sony’s obviously hinting that it’d push through a PlayStation 4 announcement as soon as Microsoft fleshes out its plans for a new console.
However, both Sony and Microsoft have denied that next-gen versions of their consoles are close to being released, even if rumours do state that Microsoft could announce theirs this January. Reports this week have pointed to some form of early hardware or spec announcement at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) event. But don’t hold your breath.
Even so, what’s the rush? Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are far more powerful than the games they are programmed to run, so both have plenty of life left in them yet. In a report by TechRadar earlier this month, EA exec Frank Gibeau admitted he was finding it hard to conceive of the point of a Playstation 4 or Xbox 720. He pointed out that, aside from tweaks to processor and graphics, he’s struggling to see what a next gen would add.
We’d be inclined to agree with ya Frank. If it aint broke, don’t fix it. What do you think? Do we need a next gen console in our lives just yet?
