Over a third of US Internet users will be doing so on a tablet in three years time. eMarketer estimates that 35.6% of users, or 90 million people, will use a tablet by 2014 and by the end of this year the figure will have reached 14.5%. The figure in 2014 equates to 27.7% of the total population owning a tablet and shows why the mobile gambling industry is experiencing such strong growth right now.
Apple’s iPad is the champion in the tablet PC market and their device will be used by 60.8million in 2014. It might sound impressive but the device’s growth is set to plateau by then as more devices flood the market. They might have to rethink naming the country iMerica after all.
Off the back of this news, research firm ChangeWave has found that demand has gone up three-fold for the devices. With Christmas waiting in the wings, the tablet PC is unsurprisingly the must-have arrival from Santa for many in North America. Of the respondents, a huge 65% confirmed Apple’s market dominance by confirming they’d be looking to acquire an iPad 2. This was followed by 22% that are interested in the advanced eReader, Amazon Kindle Fire. It’s a blow to other manufacturers such as Samsung that saw only 4% interested in their Galaxy Tab.
A spokesperson for ChangeWave explained: “The launch of the Amazon Kindle Fire represents a shot across the bow at Apple, who until now has almost completely dominated the tablet space,” ChangeWave said. “But the most immediate impact of the Amazon device is on the rest of the competition, where the survey shows it wreaking a devastating blow to a range of second tier tablet manufacturers, including Motorola, RIM, Dell, HTC, HP and Toshiba.”
On a global basis, the tablet market is expected to reach around 108million units by 2012 with Apple’s iPad the undoubted market leader. Android is creeping up on the firm but the news of Amazon’s explosion in popularity won’t sit well with those over at Google and to a lesser extent Apple.
