The growing demand for mobile broadband was stressed by The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) today, who have told European governments to get their act together and take immediate action.
The request was issued in a discussion paper developed by the ICC Task Force on Internet and Telecoms Infrastructure and Services (IT IS). In the long-winded and tortuous document, it called for governments and regulators to hurry up efforts and assign enough spectrum to support the increasing demand. Go you, ICC.
The statement comes at a time when there’s already too much of a strain on spectrum to meet the demand created by growing numbers of subscribers wanting to watch porn surf the web wirelessly, in public places.
Chair of IT IS, Eric Loeb, said: “Given the enormous contribution of mobile broadband to innovation, competition, and job and–economic–growth in developed and developing countries, it is crucial that the unprecedented potential of mobile broadband is not stifled by a lack of adequate spectrum.”
He continued to stress how the speed at which governments execute additional spectrum plans is also pretty important: “The skyrocketing uptake of 3G services and mobile devices is already putting tremendous pressure on the current spectrum allocations.”
According to the paper, the ICC cites a recent Ovum study that shows annual productivity gains in the US resulting from wirelessly enabling business applications will grow to US$130 billion by 2016. Only proving that they have a good reason to kick up such a fuss.
European Commission Vice-President for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, said: “ This entirely predictable spectrum shortage needs to be tackled as a priority today. As 4G adoption kicks in widely, that pressure will substantially increase..”
It’s not only mobile spectrum space that is depleting. If European markets want 3G services to see the 4G injection some smartphones – such as the iPhone 4S – are already capable of, then the ICC are doing the right thing to ensure Europe is the last to see super fast mobile web surfing.
