No one ever thinks it’s going to happen to them until it happens and then you find yourself fighting for your life with a serial killer. That’s what can happen to you if you use Craigslist and that’s what happened last week to 37-year-old Ronald Kroll of Volusia, Florida.
As the Current-Argus reports, while trying to sell his boat on Craigslist, Kroll met up with a man named Darin Leutbecker to test drive the boat.
Like a scene from an eerie movie, Kroll recounts that he offered the wheel to Leutbecker, who took the boat into shallow water. When they were out of sight from other boaters, Kroll said that’s when he got suspicious. Leutbecker asked Kroll to walk to the front of the boat and face the water, but Kroll smelled a rat and turned around to see the barrel of a gun pointing at him.
In a James Bond type fight Kroll and his attacker went overboard, Kroll would eventually dodge a bullet and swim to safety, while his attacker made off with the boat.
The take home message of this story is that we live in a digital age where predators and serial killers are now turning to social media to hunt their prey. As users of social media, we need to take precautions.
There’s enough horror stories out there for people to start taking notice. Like poor Jim and Charlene Sanders, who were attacked by three people, including the infamous Craisglist Killer, Kyoshi Hagashi.
The attackers entered the house under the pretence of looking to buy an engagement ring. Jim was beaten to death and his wife Charlene and her two children were terrorized and assaulted.
At this point it may be wise to form some general rules about meeting people off Craigslist:
1. It may be wise to never allow the person to know your personal address. If they’re robbers, you allow them to be able to watch your home and burglarize it when you’re not home.
2. If you must meet face-to-face, it’s probably wise never to go alone.
3. And lastly, if you must provide a phone number, try using the RingShuffle app, so that you’re not actually giving them your permanent phone number.
Take precautions, there’s some sick people out there.
