Man, Tobey Maguire’s spidey-senses must have been tingling since the start of a lawsuit over a number of poker games. Maguire’s legal battle is against the bankrupt trustees of convicted conman Bradley Ruderman and is now heading to a trial over money that Maguire won in those games.
According to E! Online, the trial has been set for the week commencing January 30 2012 and will see the trustees looking to recoup the reported $300,000 that he lost to Maguire in the games. Spidey doesn’t see it that way though. In his defence, the actor explained that he in fact paid the claimant around $168,500 in cheques marked “Poker Account” and “Poker Account (2).” Maguire also claims that he lost almost as much as he put into the underground games. It may as well be a poker-themed version of The Biggest Loser.
Other Hollywood celebrities, including Ben Affleck, were also part of the poker ring that took place at locations in Beverly Hills. The total lost by Ruderman in the “little underground” poker games amounted to $25m worth of money put into Ruderman Capital Partners by various investors.
The chances of Maguire wearing his trusty Spiderman uniform to court could also be in doubt. It comes after he gave up his the role of Peter Parker/Spidey to Andrew Garfield in a rehashed version of the film that will be released in the future. For all times sake, we’d like him to turn up at court with the spandex suit on – webs and all.
