If you’re what the kids call old school, then you’ve probably noticed a few glaring differences in the brand of rock n roll being produced today. Not to sound like that old cat, who hates on anything that was different from his time, but let’s face it, if you want to compare rock bands from the 50’s to 80’s with what we see these days, you’d be hard pressed to find as many legendary bands.
Gene Simmons from Kiss said it best when he told the Montreal Gazzette,“There hasn’t been an important rock band to emerge in the last 25 years that will still mean something in 100 years. But from the end of the 1950s to 1980, there was Elvis, The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zep, ABBA – say what you will but they wrote great songs – KISS, there’s a hundred bands from that period. All the music from Elvis to KISS was born before MTV, cellphones and the Internet. KISS still trains hard and every emo band at 19 can shine our boot heels! They’re gonna get a lesson [from us]: You blow the god—- place up!”
Legendary quote from a legendary performer.
To some of us old enough to have painted our faces and rocked out to KISS, Gene Simmons holds a hero’s place in our hearts. His partying and carrying on tales are legendary, and for those men that aren’t the marrying type, Simmons has been a beacon of light having lived with his girlfriend and raised two children in a loving family over the past 28 years.
But it seems Gene has had a change of heart and style.
It’s being reported by TMZ that Simmons has proposed to Shannon Tweed his girlfriend of 28 years. This officially puts an end to the excuse the common-law hardcore KISS/Gene Simmons fan has had to not marry his girlfriend. You know the guy I’m talking about. The guy that tunes in religiously to Simmons’ reality television show, “The Family Jewels” and still has his KISS outfit, KISS ARMY tattoo and make-up set.
Today is a day of mixed feelings for that guy. To that guy, part of the legend and persona that was Gene Simmons has died. The beast “officially” has been tamed.
Marriage? Well, if it has to be, then it can be said that Simmons had one hell of a great run- and as for the band, they’re still rocking out.
When are they going to be put in the rock n roll hall of fame? It’s long overdue.
