Uk broadband plansThose in the centre of the iGaming universe, London, will be excited to learn that the UK government has plans to fund “very high speed broadband in cities.” The words come from an advert, published by the Telegraph, for a Programme Management Office and Finance Lead, the Broadband Development UK unit of the Department of Culture Media and Sport (DCMS). It said “BDUK is also taking forward other ministerial priorities such as proposals for very high speed broadband in cities”.

Ofcom doesn’t define the term “very high speed” but it’s higher than the term “superfast” that is defined as 24mps. It comes as the UK government advances with its plans to open up broadband to rural communities. Ofcom combated problems with this earlier this week by forcing BT to drop its prices from mid August until March 2014. Rates would be cut to 12% below inflation per year and mean that those in rural locations will be able to benefit from cheaper broadband access.

Its all part of DCMS plans to have the best network in Europe by the middle of this decade. A spokesperson said, “The Government wants the UK to have the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015. We have set out plans to provide 90 per cent of homes and businesses in each local authority area with superfast broadband access and everyone with access to at least 2Mbps. We are also exploring other ways to ensure Europe’s best superfast broadband network is in the UK.”

The plans will undoubtedly be of huge benefit to all online-based industries, iGaming included. In terms of the iGaming industry, the rural plans will be of particular advantage as it means connecting with yet more potential customers.
