Tablet PCs are starting to see a similar pattern to the smart phone market as Google starts planning a dominance party. Apple may well be fighting tooth-and-nail to pin anything they can on Android. It doesn’t seem to bother consumers though. Quarter two figures produced by Strategy Analytics claim that the unprecedented market share of 94.3% that Apple enjoyed at the end of the last quarter has diminished to 61.3%. Impressive.
Coming from 2.9% of the market last quarter tablets from HTC, Motorola and Samsung have helped Google’s OS to find its way to 30.1% of the market. Talking of tablets does anyone think that someone slipped Android some speed? At the very least an E?
There could be even more excitement ahead for Android if the anticipated Amazon tablet is unveiled by Google later this year. On this point, Neil Mawston, director at Strategy Analytics, mused, “If Amazon decides to enter the Android tablet category later this year, that will bring fresh excitement and buzz to the Android community, but Amazon will need to deliver a truly standout offering if it really wants to make headway against the popular iPad.”
Apple meanwhile will release its latest version of the iPad in the middle of next year but the foundations are set for another grueling battle between the two operating systems.
As an aside, there was further evidence of Research in Motion’s perilous decline. Tablets running Microsoft Window’s 7 OS overtook the company’s Blackberry Playbook and continued to show that they probably should have stuck to an approach aimed at the corporate world.
