Older members of the population are helping to drive the growth of social networking sites. In May, Facebook managed to finally overhaul MSN to take second spot in terms of the number of unique visitors go onto the site every month. The figure for the month was 28.6million according to a survey by UKOM/Nielsen. It left MSN in the lurch with 6.4m whereas Google stayed out in front with 33.7m. It had been reported that Facebook was suffering from a downturn in visitor numbers.
The over-50s seem to have pulled them out of the slump though. The report states that the number of 50-64-year-olds visiting since 2009 has grown by 84%. Twitter saw the same sort of pattern, as May was their record months for figures with 6.14m logging in. Thanks in no small part to Ryan Giggs, the site experienced 65% more 50-64-year-old mean visiting the site and 96% more women from the same age group.
As we saw last Friday, Facebook is considered the most important amongst members of the iGaming fraternity when it comes to marketing efforts. With the influence also at its highest then it’s no surprise that people are flocking to Facebook by the million.
In other online news, the group that was behind the world-famous security breach at Sony has decided to disband. LulzSec announced that they’d had enough and explained that right from they only planned to go on for a short time after they’d finished “disrupting and exposing corporations, governments” and the population itself. They denied that law enforcement pressure was to blame and retreated to play on their Sega Master System until the end of the year.
