Nokia has slipped back in yet another market as Apple has taken top spot in Australia. Figures from research firm IDC show that Nokia’s market share has slipped from 44.2% in Q4 2010 to a miniscule 24.6% in the first quarter of the current year.
“Nokia suffered a double whammy, the feature phone market collapsed, with 79 per cent of new mobiles shipped now being smartphones,” IDC telecommunications analyst Mark Novosel said.
He added, “We expected Symbian to decline steadily throughout 2011, however the pace of decline has exceeded all expectations, with the majority of would-be Symbian buyers heading to Apple.”
This again makes Nokia’s decision last week to release a load more Symbian-based phones even more puzzling. Apple saw their share rocket from 18.8% to 31.4% in Q1 with Android joining them at the top with 29.7% of the market. Google’s OS will see further gains in the country as new handsets are released and as with other territories is expected to overtake Apple at some point in the near future. For now though, Apple is well and truly the top dingo.
Apple is also getting closer to the release of the next phone to come off their production line. iPhone IV/4G/4GS/4S/5 (delete as appropriate) will, according to those working on Apple’s Eastern supply chain, be released in the latter part of September. Fast Company reports that analyst Katy Huberty at Morgan Stanley received the information late last week and it goes with the rumors we’ve been reporting recently of a release date in that very month.
