Companies looking to develop content for any of Nokia’s devices could be forgiven for replying to any of their messages with a simple “WTF?”. After unveiling a whole raft of Windows Phone 7 information recently, this week the Finnish company revealed plans for 10 new Symbian based devices. That’s the same Symbian OS that everyone thought they were giving the cold shoulder to. In addition, the first and probably only device to be launched on the MeeGo OS was revealed.
The cheaper end of the phone market is obviously where Nokia is having its highest level of success so in that sense this is no surprise. That end could also be of increasing importance when it comes to developing nations in which the mobile Internet network is light years away from the more developed countries. Developing territories may be of particular interest to some online gaming firms that are looking at mobile expansion in a different way
Saying all that, if it affects the speed at which they develop Windows devices, it will set them even further back in terms of competing against Android and the iPhone. Even then it’s not going to be long before Android phone developers cotton on to the fact that in less economically developed countries they could target consumers with low-end devices.
Another firm suffering a downturn in their fortunes, Research in Motion (RIM), have done little to reassure anyone as they saw another key member of staff depart. Brian Wallace who was head of RIM’s digital marketing efforts has jumped ship. He’s not just going to be sitting at home twiddling his thumbs though. Oh no. Wallace has defected over to one of their main foes, Samsung. It will apply fresh pressure to the firm that is continuing to struggle.
