Those over at Apple HQ will be sporting big smiles today after the failings of Google’s Android Market were brought to the fore. Google’s operating system (OS) may have the largest market share of all those competing. Although staggering figures have been revealed showing the extent to which Android customers actually download apps.
Paidcontent carry figures from Distimo that suggest 80% of paid Android apps have got fewer than 100 downloads. Distimo commented, “It is more challenging for developers in the Google Android Market than in the Apple App Store to monetize using a one-off fee monetization model. We found that only two paid applications have been downloaded more than half a million times in the Google Android Market worldwide to date, while six paid applications in the Apple App Store for iPhone generate the same number of downloads within a two month timeframe in the United States alone.”
It doesn’t get much better if you take into account the free apps as well. Android has seen only 96 apps downloaded more than five million times and even then the top one is Google Maps that is already on most handsets. They added that of the free apps, “the majority (51.8%) have been downloaded less than 1,000 times to date.”
It goes to show again why many in the online gaming industry are still pining after a place in the Apple App Store and on Android would be more inclined to offer a downloadable app. Although this won’t affect online gaming firms that badly as paid for apps aren’t the norm in this industry.
