Conrad Black was once one of the most powerful media moguls in the world. In fact, Black was actually the third largest newspaper magnate in the world.
Black controlled Hollinger International, and through affiliates published several major publications including The Daily Telegraph, Chicago Sun Times, Jerusalem Post, National Post and countless others. For years the Baron Black of Crossharbour controlled much of what was read in newspaper prints. It all came to an end with the rise of digital publications and blogs.
No. That’s not what happened. As we all know, it’s actually a more predictable result, the US found a way to charge him with fraud, one of their favourite charges. Black was convicted of fraud in a US court back in 2007 and actually did 28 months of hard time.
Just over a year ago Black got out on bail and was able to overturn two of the three remaining mail fraud counts and now he’s resurfaced on breaking news, not for fraud this time, but because he’s just sold his Florida mansion this week for an estimated US$25-million and has moved to New York.
Someone has to say it and it might as well be me. I can’t be the only one who notices that every-time the US wants to take someone down, fraud is the charge of choice. Perhaps it’s the charge that their prosecutors are most skilled at to get someone convicted. We’ll see how they do with the Black Friday indictments, no relation to Conrad, of course.
I’m actually surprised that Black hasn’t gotten rid of all his US properties and lived somewhere where he won’t have to fight the government. Likely his bail restrictions are preventing him from doing exactly that…And he’s so close to the safety of Canada too, where he has a mansion in Toronto and won’t likely be bothered by the Canadian government. They actually have bigger things to worry about, like running a country.
