Twitter becomes a schoolyard

TwitterTwitter is increasingly becoming the playground of the celebrity. Not a moment goes by that a well-known personality decides to take the plunge and join the massed ranks of Tweeple in the “twitterverse.” Footballers are perhaps the most fascinating group of all.

Wayne Rooney joined with much fanfare over the past weekend and made his way up to 200,000 followers after only two days as a member of the site. Oblivious to the fact that Rooney is actually quite good at football, team mate Darron Gibson decided that he too wanted a piece of the action. This was the beginning of the end for @dgibbo28.

It only took two hours for the tirade of abuse directed his way to become too much for the 23-year-old as he subsequently came back down to planet Earth and has probably retreated as far as Bebo.

Some of the Tweets posted by Manchester United fans were as follows:

@dgibbo28 your performance on saturday was one of the worst I’ve ever seen of any utd player. scared of the ball much?’
@dgibbo28 hasn’t tweeted yet. Seems somewhat fitting after the countless anonymous performances we’ve seen from the ‘footballer’
@dgibbo28 my mate thought you were about 33 years old in the heart of midfield! Movement like pirlo!!
@dgibbo28 team do all hard work keeping possession then u hit row Z every fuckin time!!
@dgibbo28 the biggest compliment i can give you is that you are better than Carrick

Fair enough Gibson isn’t the best midfielder that United possess but the worst part of all of this is that United fans are the keyboard warriors. Surely if they backed Gibson he might start to play better and not “hit row Z every fuckin time.”

It’s all very schoolyard though. You can imagine @dgibbo28 running home to mummy after the bullying became too much to which he swiftly receives a clip round the ear and is told to man up. For now we shall have to wait for @dgibbo28’s much-anticipated comeback to Twitter or the day that United fans start adding him on his new haunt at Bebo.
