Companies other than Apple and Google looking to to crack the mobile OS market haven’t had a lot of luck recently. Only yesterday we reported that app developers were plumping for Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, and now the US public are going to same way.
How do you separate the two of them though? Well that’s where a survey by Nielsen comes in.
According to the results, Android has become the most coveted smart phone OS amongst US customers for the first time since it was created. Released yesterday, the series of monthly surveys that were conducted between January and March this year show that 31% of consumers were pining for the little green monster and his OS. Apple, meanwhile, were behind Android with 30% keen on the iOS.
In the same survey, conducted between July and September 2010, the results showed that only 26% wanted an Android whereas 33% were keen on the iPhone. This trend is likely to continue for some time yet as Android is effectively now being run on most phones that aren’t manufactured by Apple.
It could change slightly when Microsoft and Nokia’s partnership gets off the ground but Google really is giving Apple a run for its money in this area. Early signs are that the two of them may well have rocked up to the smart phone party too late and unless they can offer something drastically different they’re likely to be playing second fiddle to Apple and Google. The real battle will start when Android gets its act together in the tablet market. Then it’ll get ugly!
