If you thought all of the cool cats had already entered the tablet market then think again. You probably forgot that Sony had, until today, failed to try and dislodge Apple’s market dominance. They haven’t just gone for one tablet either and the technology giant is siding with one of Apple’s current arch-nemesis’s, Google’s Android.
The two tablets will run on Android’s recently launched Honeycomb, or 3.0, and are the latest challengers to Apple’s crown. What of the tablets themselves though?
One of the devices, named the S1, will have a 9.4-inch screen. The other device, the S2, is smaller in size and has two 5.5-inch screens, resembling the Nintendo DS. Both devices feature WiFi and are 3G/4G compatible. Integration with the PlayStation Suite means that PlayStation games will be playable but this is of course if they ever manage to fix the PlayStation Network.
Sony is quoted on Mashable.com as saying the S1 in particular, “uses infrared technology and works as a universal remote control for a variety of AV devices … turning on TVs, changing the channel and adjusting the volume.” Is this Sony in essence revealing that the devices are simply for someone who wants to play on a Nintendo DS and operate their TV with an elaborate remote control?
The tablets are expected to land in the US market late this year and likely a few months later in the UK. The name is likely to give them sales but the chances of cracking Apple’s hold on the market are relatively low.
