The online gambling industry for the most part is a personable and close knit community; it isn’t uncommon for co-workers and fellow industry professionals to romance with one another. If you’ve ever been to an Affiliates Conference, you’d already know this.
According to CareerBuilders annual office romance survey of more than 3,900 workers, 37 percent of workers say they have dated someone they worked with over their career.
18 percent report dating co-workers at least twice in their career and 30 percent reported that they went on to marry a person they dated in the office.
Then of course, there are those who just have huge crushes on their co-workers, but never actually act upon their desires, they make up the 8 percent of workers who currently work with someone they would like to date…Naturally more men make up this group (11 percent) compared to just 4 percent of women.
If you’ve ever worked in a call center you know that hook-ups between co-workers happen on a regular basis. It could be on a lunch break, night shift or at company party or conference, more often than not, romance is going down. There’s nothing wrong with it, just as long as people are aware of the rules.
If a work-place romance doesn’t adhere to company etiquette the results can be disastrous. You’ve probably witnessed a work relationship that ended badly, it can interfere with production, muddy the lines of communication, cause division in the workplace and can sometimes lead to the expulsion of the parties involved. Six percent of workers reported that they left a job due to office romance.
As I said before, it can get messy if one isn’t aware of both the social rules and the company rules. Socially, the rules are less cut and dry, but they are uniform and consistent particularly for men. Guys, if you’re romancing a co-worker then you need to understand that in this day and age, it’s probably not as discreet as you think it is, no matter how many attempts you have made to keep it on the down low.
Women talk as much, if not more than men and if you didn’t already know that, wait, there’s more you should know before you dip your wick into the company ink.
As expert Dating Coach David Wygant explains, if you’re going to be romancing a co-worker, you shouldn’t be surprised when fights between you and her are broadcast all over the office.
Next, don’t think you can keep everything on the down low playa. Don’t think you can flirt and scoop digits from that new strawberry blonde dime-piece like your James Bond and skate away with it. As Wygant explains, more often than not, if you’re romancing a co-worker she’ll know every move you make in the office. If you’re her superior you run the danger of facing the WRATH of a woman scorn in the form of an HR complaint, so when wheeling and dealing in the office, err on the side of caution. The last thing you need is a scandal.
Perhaps the most dangerous situation for man in the office is if you find yourself in the situation where you’re dating a co-worker who is your superior. While it may be fun, as it always is to romance with a sexy woman in a position of authority, (that’s why we love that sexy cop fantasy. That and the thought of handcuffs.) it can also be extremely dangerous for your career.
As David Wygant explains, if she has a higher job title than you and you mess around on her or break up with her in a less than amicable way, you could get fired or be walking on eggshells at work all the time. In lay-man’s terms, don’t shit where you eat.
Dipping into company ink is something that may not always be in your control, chemistry and sexual attraction at times can take on a power of its own.
Some rules of thumb to remember: keep it professional, never let office romance interfere with productivity, and if possible keep the PDA’s to a minimum at work…Nobody wants to see that shit anyways.
