Regular followers of the CalvinAyre.com tablog are quite aware of da boss’ attitude towards relationships with members of the opposite sex and his belief that making one woman miserable is nothing compared with making so many happy. A report released today suggests that Calvin may well be onto something.
Researchers at the University of Michigan have finally confirmed that heartbreak really does hurt. The new study used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to find that the same brain networks activated when you’re burned by hot coffee are also illuminated when you’re thinking about a past flame that rebuffed your advances.
The lead researcher, Ethan Kross, commented that the brain can’t firmly distinguish between physical and emotional pain, and that heartache and painful breakups are “more than just metaphors.”
21 women and 19 men took part in the study and the only criteria were no history of chronic pain or mental illness but you did have to have been put back on the shelf by a romantic partner in the last six months.
Being amongst that select group of 40 must have been quite the experience. They were all likely recruited from the best of the best dating websites (as that’s obviously where all single people live these days) and the bitterness flying around in the room would have been a joy to behold.
All of the above just goes on to support the earlier mentioned mantra about not making people miserable – if you don’t get into these relationships in the first place then no one gets hurt and everyone’s happy.
