Tory MP Ken ClarkeThe usual doom and gloom of the chancellor’s yearly budget yesterday gave the sports betting industry even more reason to be rolling into work this morning with a budgetary hangover.

If the yearly rise in the cost of alcoholic drinks didn’t do enough to rock the gaming conference space and gambling industry the actions of one government minister have meant that one firm in particular has had to pay out.

Ladbrokes had offered odds of 16/1 on whether Tory MP Ken Clarke would try and take 40 winks during George Osborne’s speech and he duly obliged.

It was spotted by Labour leader Ed Miliband who suggested Osborne’s dulcet tones were ‘so dull even the justice secretary fell asleep’.

Alex Donohue of Ladbrokes said: “Clarke might have been caught napping but our punters certainly weren’t. Top marks to the leader of the opposition for spotting this one.”

Around 50 punters are thought to have benefited from the fact that Clarke decided to take an impromptu nap as the Guardian reports that “cries of alarm-clock Britain” rang out across the Commons after the veteran minister decided to nod off.

Why did Clarke fall into a slumber though? Rumors that it was anything from trying to upstage the chancellor to him watching the entire 156 episodes of The West Wing to get pointers have been doing the rounds. It was a lot simpler than that though. Political editor of The House Magazine, Sam Macrory, saw him making his way through a beer and curry at the Kennington Tandoori on Tuesday night.
