golden-globesThe Hollywood Foreign Press Association gives out the Golden Globe Awards each year and as they do each year, Bodog.com has posted their odds for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards to be held January 16th 2011.

If you’re a fan of movies, this is the best time of the year as all of the major studios save the films they consider their prestige pieces until the end of the year. They do this to keep their films fresh in the minds of awards voters.

The Golden Globes are like the cool uncle of the awards shows. Unlike the Oscars where the contenders are in theatre seating, the Golden Globes have their guests at tables with food and booze. It gives the show a more relaxed and laid back atmosphere when compared to the stuffy Oscar awards.

Another major change is the separation of the feature film awards into drama and comedy/musical categories. This gives comedic films a chance to share the glory by not having to compete with the prestige pictures. That’s why when you look down the list of past winners, you’ll see The Hangover and Mrs. Doubtfire.

Sometimes separating the categories works like last year where the nominees included The Hangover, 500 Days of Summer, It’s Complicated, Julie & Julia and Nine. All five were great films but no matter how much you enjoyed them, they wouldn’t be considered Oscar worthy.

This year the separation doesn’t work unless you broaden your definition of comedic film. The Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie vehicle, The Tourist was supposed to be a thriller but still garnered a Comedy nomination. I wasn’t thrilled with the flick and neither were the critics who have widely panned the film. Perhaps the Golden Globes consider unintentional comedy in their voting process.

The Kings Speech leads the way with seven Golden Globe nominations, followed by the Fighter and the Social Network with six awards each.
