Coalition government on the way out

vince-cableIt’s lasted for about as long as your “first time” did and those in the gambling industry are already champing at the bit to make sure you put money on it completely collapsing. The best thing about it all though is that their worst nightmare has been triggered off by one of their own.

Your first look at Liberal Democrat Business Secretary Vince Cable gives you the impression of a school head master – usually very placid and calm, but when he blows up that’s it. There’s no way to stop him and in the heat of the moment things get said, they get published, and he gets banished. It’s the way it goes for backbench politicians if they say anything out of turn, but from what we’ve seen so far Cable won’t be retiring to a lifetime of online poker anytime soon.

The furore centres on some comments the Right Hon. Mr Cable made about Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation taking over the rest of Sky, and unfortunately for him The Daily Telegraph “happened” to have a recording device on them. Every word was captured and he may still be in the cabinet but all powers have been stripped.

Cable is one of the key cogs on the Lib Dem side of the coalition meaning it’s unlikely he’ll go own without a fight and if he is dismissed then it could be disastrous for the coalition.

This isn’t the first time chinks have started to appear in the coalition’s armour, the increasingly violent student protests giving the sceptics another reason to attack the mounting fractured nature of the coalition.

Graham Sharpe, from William Hill, commented: “The coalition relies on cross-Party agreement, and the indication that there are significant cracks appearing could jeopardise the long term survival of the arrangement”

We shall see what happens to Mr Cable, but who doesn’t enjoy a bit of Vinsanity every once in awhile?
