Weird-Asian-NewsOkay, we begin our tour in the Philippines, where the deeply religious country is preparing for the imminent All Saints’ and All Souls’ Day celebrations. We’re not Catholic, so we’re taking this on faith, but part of the prep apparently involves sprucing up the graves of relatives. However, Manila’s authorities wish to make it clear to those headed on down to the tombs with bottles of Mr. Clean that alcoholic drinks, bladed weapons and gambling will not be permitted inside the cemetery gates. Just this weekend, or never?

Shifting to Thailand, a wily ‘bush gambling’ ring has been busted in Pattaya. The gang set up shop in a shed outside a hotel, equipped with surveillance video gear to warn of any police presence. But the cops simply cut the camera’s cable, which doesn’t seem to have alarmed any of the 40 (that’s a big shed) gamblers inside. Their lack of alarm can possibly be explained because, in the words of the police report, they were too busy ‘maniacally’ playing their Hi-Lo betting game. However, when the cops burst in, the gamblers executed something called a ‘starburst maneuver’, which allowed 12 of them to escape. Just the cops luck to attempt to arrest the world’s only maniacal gambling/synchronized swim team.

We end our Asian tour in China, where a gambler in Zhejiang province lost all his money, his bankbook and credit cards gambling in Hangzhou. Despite this, when Xu Shun learned there was an illegal card tournament going on in Qiandaohu, he stuffed some ramen noodles in his backpack and walked more than 170km in two days. Sadly, police raided the gambling den shortly after Xu arrived, making his long march an utterly futile pursuit. See, this is what happens when the authorities don’t permit online gambling to flourish.
