Lindsay Lohan the latest victim of a skewed criminal justice system
Child stars who make a smooth transition into adulthood are invariably supported by a solid, stable team committed to working in the child’s best interest. Suffice it to say, Lindsay Lohan’s team came up a bit short in this regard. To make matters worse, her father’s addictive personality traits appear to have been passed down to her along with his name.
In failing her most recent drug test, Lindsay violated the terms of her probation stemming from her DUI charges. That was the deal, she knew it, she broke it, fair do’s. But to deny her bail was a little extreme (especially since the judge apparently didn’t posess the legal authority to do so). It suggests the rather dubious notion that she posed some kind of physical threat to others and thus society woud be best served by her incarceration.
Fortunately, another judge reversed the decision and Lindsay was freed after posting $300K bail. If anyone thinks Lilo got off easy here, think again. Unless you’re on the Forbes list, parting (even temporarily) with that sum is rarely easy, but it’s even less easy when you’re an actress who hasn’t cashed a major film check in quite some time.
And that’s a fucking shame. Because the girl can act. Of late, the quality of most of her projects hasn’t been up to her talents, but we’re hoping Inferno, her planned Linda Lovelace biopic, will reverse that trend. To that end, we hope she gets the proper help she needs to deal with her addictions, but she won’t find that in ‘administrative segregation’.
It’s said that when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. That must be why the ‘tough love’ approach to dealing with substance abusers that’s so popular in (but not limited to) America believes the best solution to a medical problem is a jail cell. Obviously, driving under the influence of anything is stupid and criminal, but Lindsay hasn’t been accused of doing anything like that since 2007. All of her recent problems stem from her inability to stop imbibing, so until she gets behind the wheel of a car again, the system that deals with her should be medical, not legal.
