BetUS owners reaping what they’ve sown

BetUS-Owners-Reaping-SowedBetUS, a predominantly US-facing online gaming company, was for years referred to in the business as ‘BodogLite’ due to its insistence on hiring anyone that used to work for Bodog, as well as the way it mimicked Bodog website graphics, marketing and eCom programs. BetUS was also widely known for playing fast and loose with the rules of convention, but it now appears the rules of karma have come back to bite the site’s owners on the ass.

BetUS’ owners are American brothers who used to be partners with BetOnSports founder Gary Kaplan in an organization called NASA, before splitting in a manner that (in the eyes of many in the industry) left a dark cloud hanging over the new organization. Now rumors are circulating that the perpetrators have become the victims of similar shenanigans at the hands of their own disgruntled ex-staffers.

It’s being reported that these ex-staffers absconded with the BetUS American sports betting database and have founded a new site (also predominantly US-facing) at www.northbet.com in order to leverage this stolen property. Northbet’s ‘About Us’ section boldly states that they operate in “fully licensed jurisdictions” but neglects to identify any of them, which suggests there’s really only one — the unlicensed jurisdiction of Costa Rica. As much as we think this is BetUS’ aptly earned karma kicking it in the ass, we also think that anyone who chooses to do business with this ‘SouthParkBet’ should have their fucking heads examined.

Unfortunately, this sorry scenario also reflects negatively on Costa Rica. Though there are good organizations that choose to operate from CR, this type of behavior could not happen in London, Kahnawake, Antigua, Malta, Isle of Man, Gibraltar or the Channel Islands where there are proper regulatory bodies overseeing the industry. Could this be what was behind the recent shooting at the Hotel Del Rey, Costa Rica’s famous bookie hang out? Like they say, sow the wind, reap the whirlwind…

I guess you guys are forgetting the fact that not only was Costa Rica your main base of operations for a good 10 years, but that you also still run all of your wagering, line making, and eCommerce out of your compound in the unlicensed, wild west type situation that is Costa Rica. The fact that you were able to go in to Antigua 4 years ago and buy your way to a license in their oh so upstanding jurisdiction, while simultaniously having your European license approved and then rejected in a mear 3 hours really speaks volumes about your business. Since Bodog is so on the up and up, how about posting a video of Calvin Ayre riding around Las Vegas on his Segway while wearing dated Ed Hardy gear?

You will have to talk to the bodog guys about bodog issues, the views in these articles are those of the authors and not necessarily shared by others. I give a lot of editorial freedom to the authors in the final work. You can go here for a starter on bodog world BodogBrand.com.

However, I do know that no bodog branded entity has ever had a license rejected or terminated anywhere in the world and I know that the Antiguan license was applied for in the normal course of affairs and no money was ever paid other than normal fees. Bodog Europe, which operates out of Antigua, is now larger than the entire rest of the industry there. There are also bodog branded entities with a license in the Philippines and I think there are others under way.

Lastly, your suggestion I am running anything but charity work out of the Bodog Compound in Costa Rica is really funny. Clearly you did not rank an invite to the industry party Revecca threw there a few months back. I personally love Costa Rica and I agree with the author above that there are some great operators there, one that would have you working for them seems not to be one of them.

Inaccurate forum gossip is not a reliable source of information and posting anonymously is not only cowardly but lacking in credibility when making these innaccurate presentations.

For the record, I have been told that BetUS had their Kahnawake license terminated for irregularitys so this is an odd angle for you to take (as a current or former and now northbet person).

That said…I love to see spirited debate of the positions our reporters take. Noting your apparent interest in Vegas and myself in your post, you should attend the Posting Social I am hosting this weekend in Vegas…everyone who posts or reads this site is invited.

Here is a thread that was used as a reference by the author above.

This appears to show the Northbet guys grinding the BetUS list. This would appear to be their plan to stay off radar.

Everyone with even basic eCom knows how to issue international Debit cards to their VIP lists so this is a funny angle to sell.

It’s nice to see you jumping to the defense of a company you are no longer “associated” with, but i guess old loves take time to fade.

I apologize for insinuating that a Bodog branded company had a license rejected in Europe, this was an incorrect statement. What I should have said, was that a company acting as a front for Bodog had their license approved and rescinded. Much like Morris Mohawk Gaming serves as the US customer service arm of Bodog, FiverMedia or whatever they have taken to calling it serves the Bodog US marketing interests and Calvin Ayre “retiring” from being involved in the operations of Bodog, your front in Europe was rejected from doing business, causing Bodog to shut down their Irish offices overnight, which were hard at work training their Customer Service force. This caused Bodog to work harder (bribe like crazy) to be licensed in Antigua, as books licensed in Antigua freely market to European customers. One thing we can not fault Bodog on, is their creativity in finding ways to access markets, which, for lack of a better word have been “closed” to them.
Further, I cannot deny that Bodog and the Calvin Ayre foundation have done fantastic charity work for the peoples of Costa Rica, the Phillipines, Antigua, and to our furry bear faced friends in China. I also can not deny, that when I place a phone call to your wagering center, the agents that answer have a distinct Spanglish tone to their speech. One could say, that they sound as though they are Spanish speaking folks, speaking English. Looking at your bases of operations: Antigua, Montreal (kahnawake), Phillipines and Costa Rica, I can only see one out of a possible four that could possess a workforce of English speaking Latins, and a fine one at that. Another area where Bodog can not be faulted, excellent customer service.

Which is why I found it odd that a company with seemingly so much going for it, would stop to playground mud slinging regarding the BetUS/Northbet situation, although i must admit the Elephant in the office brought about a good hearted chuckle.

As for my information being forum based fodder, i think this diatribe suggests that I may have a more intimite knowledge of their operations than a forum jockey could gleen.
As for my choice to remain anonymous, that has more to do with an article written by another of your skilled scribes, in which they accurately noted that the industry tends to hire from within, and I prefer not be outed as someone who slanders a former employer, although I do not believe that is what I am doing here, although some may construe it as such. I am simply attempting to right some wrongs which your author decided to perpetrate.

Anonymous….a follow up article by one of our reporters is coming on this and will reference some of your last post. However, these threads are to discuss issues in the articles published not to have our readers time wasted with things that are not remotely relevant to the story an in your particular case since I have direct knowledge of some of it….based on inaccurate and likely mean spirited gossip.

Posts in here that are off topic will not be allowed through….go to a forum if you have a beef to get off your chest about something.

    Thanks for your understanding.

One more thing…media lesson number one….fighting with media spreads the story you don't like far and wide. Often very few read a story until someone objects to it in an inexperienced way and then everyone finds the story an interesting soap opera.

So the BetUS customer list is out there, stolen by insiders. As opposed to the Bodog list which is stolen by someone on the inside and then sold and resold to those on the outside.

Can not comment on the bodog list been years since that was my issue, used to be good when I ran things though…you should get a copy to add to the BetUS one you guys stole :-)

However as I pointed out below…this is not a bodog story. Try to keep the comments to the issue of whether or not you guys stole the BetUS list and are marketing to is as is all over the industry.
