The Hotel Del Rey in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica – the second home of the country’s online gaming industry – was recently the site of a drive-by shooting. Back in the day when Bodog had its global head office in Costa Rica and Bodog founder Calvin Ayre’s primary residence was the infamous Bodog Compound, Calvin and Co. were Del Rey regulars, so much so that staff used to announce his arrival with the same enthusiasm as the folks at Cheers greeted Norm.
The shooters have as yet to be identified, but it’s doubtful that the perps had any connection to the online gaming industry. Most of the larger operators have long since abandoned Costa Rica for other jurisdictions (Kahnawake in Canada, London, Antigua, Malta, Gibraltar, Isle of Man and the Philippines, to name just a few) that offer superior legal protections as well as less violent crime.
Given the joint’s infamy, this will likely go down (pun intended) in history as the shootout at the Ho-K Corral. When informed of the shooting, Calvin expressed concern that the ‘girlfriend’ who spent time with Forbes Magazine reporter Matt Miller during his visit to the Del Rey wasn’t injured in the attack.
