Plastiki bottle ship ends Pacific voyage

I was having lunch today and I read in our local newspaper here in Vancouver that the Plastiki bottle ship has just made it to Australia from San Francisco. This ship is made from recycled bottles of various sizes. The sail is also recycled plastic. Fully powered by wind and sunlight using solar panels.

The founder of the ship and the idea to sail it is David de Rothschild, heir to the Rothschild banking fortune. He set out on this journey to raise awareness for the environment and in particular the seas of the world which now have 15,000 pieces of debris litter every square kilometer! Insane! I grew-up here on the Pacific Coast so I admire the work that was done here.

During their entire journey they sent Tweets and Flickr images to their fans and updated their Blog.

I love to see people doing good things for the environment and leveraging the power of the Internet and Social Media to raise awareness. If you would like to help clean up the seas of the world and take action, you can do so on the official website.

Below is a video of a 60 knot storm that they sailed through!
