Great British Open whisky cocktails

whiskey-pouringWhenever the British Open takes place in Scotland I am reminded of a sweet Scottish lass I used to play a round with. She had soft hands, a safe grip and was always meticulous when it came to club-polishing.

She even loved watching golf in bed. She was perfect, but unfortunately I haven’t seen the fair Caroline since I slipped in her bunker without her permission, so nowadays I have to watch the tee-to-green coverage of The Open with nothing friskier than a dram or two of whisky to warm my cockles.

Drinking snake poison straight is always a bit dangerous before at least 5pm, though. So here are several brilliant ways to enjoy the drink of the gods without waking up bruised and naked in an alleyway.

The Flying Scotsman – Mix three glasses whisky, 2.5 glasses Italian Vermouth and add one tablespoon bitters and a tablespoon of sugar syrup. Chocs away.

Hilton Fling – Mix a measure of Dubonnet with half a measure of Drambuie. Add a dash of orange bitters and a slice of orange. Invite Paris and hit record.

Rusty Nails - Mix a measure of Drambuie to a measure of whisky and stir well. A great loosener if your nailing’s a bit rusty.

Manor Punch - Mix a measure of whisky, Martini and a dash of Drambuie and serve with a cherry. Shake or stir. Packs more punch than David Haye.

Rob Roy - Mix a measure of whisky and Martini and add two dashes of Angostura bitters. Roy’s the boy.

Robbie Burns – Measure of whisky mixed with Martini and three dashes of Benedictine. Deadlier than carpet burns.

Prince Charlie – Equal measures of Drambuie, Cognac and lemon juice. A right royal high.

Flora Macdonald – Mix a measure of Drambuie and dry gin to two measures of French Vermouth. The golfing man’s Big Mac.
