Austrians go gambling crazy, country somehow survives

A new study reveals that per capita spending on gambling in Austria more than doubled between 2001-09, and that traditional lotteries have suffered as online betting and slot machines gained in popularity. Those crazy Austrians are even spending more per capita on gambling than on education.

Well, clearly Austria must be a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah amongst the Alps, a haven of sin and depravity that… What? The country ranked #14 (out of 180) on the United Nations’ Human Development Index in 2009?
