Wimbledon witnesses longest tennis match in history

John Isner and Nicolas Mahut fought out the tennis equivalent of the First World War yesterday after playing for ten hours in their men’s singles second round match at Wimbledon.

And, like that hellish stalemate on the fields of Flanders, there appears to be no end in sight. Hostilities are set to resume today with the scores between the American and the Frenchman tied at 59-59 in the final set, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase, “I’ll take the fifth”.

“Nothing like this will ever happen again ever,” said Isner, who clearly has learned nothing from history. Didn’t they say that the Great War would be over by Christmas? Read more.
