British Horseracing Authority gets out its begging bowl

For an industry on its financial knees (or in the horses’ case, its fetlocks), the British Horseracing Authority isn’t shy about issuing ‘demands’ that the gov’t force bookmakers to pony up more pennies than the £77M expected from this year’s horserace betting levy. Though there may be legitimate concerns that all bookmakers are not sharing the load equally, the BHA also has some pressing questions to answer, specifically in terms of its relevance to younger generations, most of whom regard the track as just another place to drink. Because without some sign that the sport of kings can stand on its own four hooves, the bookmaker levy can only postpone the inevitable. Read more.
