brianhastingsThe Kentucky Derby is a great opportunity to join a longstanding American tradition and gather with friends to watch history unfold. The Derby itself has been in existence for 135 years, but drinking with friends is an activity that has been around forever, taking only a short break during the years of prohibition. Speaking of drinking, there’s one drink that must make its appearance at your party in order for it to truly be considered a delicious Kentucky Derby party, that would be the Mint Julep. Here’s a nice recipe for making it in bunches. Read more.

To throw a delicious Kentucky Derby party it almost has to be a patio party. There’s something not quite right about an indoor Kentucky Derby party. Get outside in the sunshine, set up the big screen where everyone can see it, even those getting it on in the hot tub.

In the spirit of the Kentucky Derby, the food you serve has to be class. We’re not talking Kentucky Fried chicken here, or Fat burger, we’re talking about Kentucky Burgoo, or Benedictine Sandwich Appetizers. Here’s a recipe for Kentucky Burgoo from suite101.com that will wow your guests.

Kentucky Burgoo
• 2 pounds pork shank
• 2 pounds beef shank
• 3 pound roasting chicken
• 8 quarts water
• 1 ½ pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed
• 1 ½ pounds onions, diced
• 6 carrots, chopped
• 2 green peppers, chopped
• 2 cups chopped cabbage
• 1 quart tomato puree
• 2 cups corn kernels
• 2 red chili peppers
• 2 cups diced okra
• 2 cups lima beans
• 1 cup diced celery
• ¼ cup chopped parsley
• ½ teaspoon thyme
• ½ teaspoon oregano
• Salt and cayenne pepper to taste

Put your pork, beef, whole chicken and water in a large pot, boil it. Reduce heat and simmer until meat is tender and falling off bones, kind of like how Nicole Richie used to look. Then Remove meat from the pot, allow to cool before removing meat from bones. Combine meat, potatoes, onions, carrots, green pepper, cabbage, tomato puree, corn, chili peppers, okra, lima beans and celery in pot. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 4 hours or until thickened. Add parsley, thyme, salt, cayenne pepper and oregano in the last 30 minutes of cooking.

Of course, don’t forget to bet on and watch the Kentucky Derby, all that food and partying is second to the historical event itself. Although, I have always felt it’s time to spice it up a little, the Derby needs a little more action, something along the lines of THIS.
