Ongame deserves a high-five and an NFL style ass slap from poker players for moving in the right direction. Ongame has announced that they intend to join the Bodog Poker Network School in their solution to rakeback. Bodog Network’s novel rakeback strategy was first rolled out by Jonas Odman and Patrik Selin in September of 2009.
The wheels of change in the industry were put in motion when the Bodog Poker Network developed a solution to the industry wide rakeback issue. Specifically, the Bodog Network created a method to readdress the way poker players were valued. They endeavored to change the way revenue was split between players at each table, to better reflect the true value of its players, a strategy conceived and implemented by Jonas Odman and Patrik Selin. Interestingly, Odman and Selin were speaking out against rakeback when they were running the management team of Ongame back in 2005, when it was sold to BWIN as the fastest growing poker network in the world. Selin, now CEO of Bodog Poker Network, was the CEO of Ongame during its formative years up to its sale to Bwin.
According to Odman, “Following this model, operators on Bodog Network would never lose money because they bring a winning player to the network and the value of a player cannot be less than zero. A winning player will be worth very little, but at least something. To run a profitable business, operators will have to invest in marketing and try to attract casual players to the network. If they succeed, they will be making more money than they would on any other network”.
Poker players around the globe can appreciate a company’s willingness to address an issue in a way that fairly and effectively addresses the problem holistically, as opposed to the all too common band-aid solutions. Ultimately those networks and companies that neglect to keep pace will eventually find their client base folding. Read OnGame’s recent announcement.
