As oil and gas prices continue to soar, and the devastating effects of climate change become more evident, the need for new energy sources has never been greater. Fortunately for everyone, there are ways to meet our increasing energy demands, and ways of solving the problem of decreasing fossil fuels and the havoc that those non-renewable resources cause to our environment.
Nuclear Energy
One of the most debated sources of the energy requirement is nuclear power. There are quite a few advantages of nuclear power including the fact that nuclear power causes a lot less pollution. The don’t emit carbon dioxide or sulfur and nitrogen dioxides and because of this, the use of nuclear power can help to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases by 128 million tons per year. Also, the nuclear power plants of today are far safer than they were two decades ago not to mention that we can produce a hell of a lot of energy from these facilities.
The downside? Nuclear energy is derived from uranium. Uranium is a scarce resource and its supply is estimated to last only for the next 30 to 60 years depending on the actual demand (which will increase exponentially according to population growth.) Nuclear reactors also produce dangerous and hard to dispose of nuclear waste, but thankfully not that much compared to the power generated. According to the EPA, the byproducts of uranium fission remain radioactive for about 10,000 years requiring safe disposal away from society until they lose their significant radiation values. This means that these waste sites will require monitoring and supervision from the next 250 generations. Not cool but manageable.
Clean Energy
Wind, solar and tidal power are all renewable and clean sources of energy that would and could fit the bill for human energy consumption. However, from what I’ve read, the technology needs to improve…these sources simply do not generate enough power to keep things running for over 6 billion energy consumers (Growth patterns indicate this number will be 10 billion people by 2025.) It’s safe to assume that the technology will be developed further and that eventually we will be able to use these natural sources as our primary source of energy. That, and the growing trend of more efficient appliances and cars and we could be well on our way to reversing the climate crisis. Unfortunately we aren’t there quite yet.
A little optimism please…
More funds and time need to be dedicated to researching the clean and renewable sources of energy. The sun will shine for a long time, the wind will always blow and the tides will always rise – I like to think that we are smart enough animals to harness the energy from these perpetual sources and make things better for the future of our planet. I am doing my part by directing my investment fund to target oil alternative investing and nuclear energy investing….and I am selling my private jet.
